Dawn Buckingham is leading the largest coastal protection effort in United States history – the Coastal Texas Project, which will feature the largest storm-surge barrier gate system in the world and help protect the nation’s largest port and petrochemical complex.

Under Dawn’s leadership, the Texas General Land Office has also completed the largest beach nourishment project in Texas history, restoring 14.5 miles of beaches and dunes at McFaddin Beach. Dawn has delivered tens of millions of dollars to coastal communities, combating erosion, restoring marshlands, improving water quality, and protecting communities along Texas’s 3,400 miles of shoreline.

If you live on or near the Texas coast, you know the stakes. Storms come. Flooding happens. And when they do, whether our leaders are ready makes all the difference.

The GLO has led additional beach renourishment projects to protect communities and public access, including placing more than 378,000 cubic yards of sand along West Galveston Beach. It has coordinated oil spill cleanups to protect the Gulf and the communities that depend on it. It has invested in coastal resilience and flood mitigation so that when the next storm hits, Texas families are not starting from zero.

Dawn Buckingham is not waiting for a disaster to pay attention to the coast. She is doing the work now, because preparation is not optional when lives and livelihoods depend upon it.
